Used Oldsmobile Engines
Oldsmobile’s famous V8 engine, called the Oldsmobile Rocket, was built and marketed from 1949 until 1990 and was one of the first successful post-war overhead-valve V8 engines made by General Motors. The original Oldsmobile V8 Rocket 350 engine was assembled in Lansing, Michigan, and helped establish performance-oriented engines in American cars. Before the Rocket V8, Oldsmobile made straight-8 engines in the 1930s and 1940s, which were the company’s primary engine choice until the V8’s introduction in 1949. Oldsmobile has also manufactured diesel engines of both V6 and V8 engines between 1978 and 1985. These Oldsmobile engines were based on the Olds 350 gasoline architecture, but the V8 diesel had reliability issues and was later discontinued.
Oldsmobile Engine Compatibility
The Oldsmobile has the 260 cu in (4.3 L), 307 cu in (5.0 L), 330 cu in (5.4 L), 350 cu in (5.7 L), and 403 cu in (6.6 L) V8 engines, which are known as the small-blocks. On the other hand, the V8 engines with higher deck height have a 400 cu in (6.6 L), 425 cu in (7.0 L), and 455 cu in (7.5 L) Oldsmobile engine. These models are widely known as the ‘big-blocks’. The Oldsmobile Diesel engine has a displacement of 262.55 cu in V6 and 260.54 cu in, 350.06 cu in V8.
One of the other interesting Oldsmobile motors is the Quad4, which has several double overhead camshaft (DOHC) versions that were made between 1987 and 2002. The 2.3-liter DOHC Quad4s and the 2.4-liter Twin Cam were some of the engines under this model. All Quad4 family engines were produced at the Lansing Engine Plant.
Fitment in Other Makes
Small-block Oldsmobile motors- 260, 307, 350, and 403 - are pretty much interchangeable with each other, while big blocks (400, 425, 455) will fit, but you'll probably have to make some adjustments to the intake manifold and hood clearance. It's also possible to drop an Olds big or small block into a Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac, or Chevy engine bay, but you'll need to track down the motor mounts and accessories from a car with an Olds powerplant.
The V8 Oldsmobile engines, like the 307 and 403, were often shared with Buicks like the 307, which showed up in the LeSabre, Electra, Riviera, Estate Wagon, and Regal, and the 403, which appeared in the Buick Century Estate, Riviera, Electra, Estate Wagon, and LeSabre too.
Oldsmobile Transmissions
Oldsmobile used a bunch of different GM automatic transmissions over the years. You might see a TH350, TH400, TH200-C, or even one of the later electronic 4-speeds like 4T60 or 4T65E, depending on the model and Oldsmobile engine size. From 1975 to 1980, the Ninety-Eight used a TH400 with big V8 engines, and later switched to a TH440T4 or 4T60 in 1985-1990 with 3.8-5.7L engines. In other cases, the 88 Royale with a 3.8L V6 used a 4T60E, the Alero used 4T40E with 4-cyl and 4T45E with a 3.4L V6, and the Aurora with a V8 used a 4T80E then later a 4T65E. The older Oldsmobiles (Cutlass, Ciera, Silhouette etc) from before the mid 1990s often used the GM Turbo-Hydramatic series such as TH125C, TH200-4R, TH440-T4, and standard TH350 automatics, depending on year and engine.
